About ECU Health EastCare
ECU Health EastCare provides critical care air and ground transportation service and is the only medical transport service in the region accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. There are nine ground units—six mobile ICUs, including one dedicated to children’s transport, and three BLS ambulances. EastCare’s five air units cover nearly 300,000 miles during more than 3,500 flights every year and are based in Bertie, Craven, Nash, Onslow and Wayne counties. All units provide rapid transportation and advanced medical care to critically ill and injured patients, including trauma, cardiac, medical, high-risk obstetric, burn and pediatric patients, and more.
1. Operates ambulances to transport sick, injured or convalescent patients to and from VMC, other hospitals or home. This also requires being familiar with the region and an ability to read maps expeditiously while using safe and responsible driving techniques to reach destination.
2. Administers basic life support/first aid to transported patients.
Assist co-worker in moving patients in and out of ambulances on a stretcher, wheelchair or isolette, assuring comfort and no further injury to the patient.
Is required to demonstrate a working knowledge of the operation of the Mobile Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Ambulance including basic electrical systems, oxygen delivery systems, medical air systems and the restraining of auxiliary medical equipment used be emergency personnel. The EMT is fully responsible for all equipment usage while on duty.
3. Performs basic ambulance maintenance, clerical duties and other duties as assigned.
Checks fluid level, tire pressure, refueling, cleaning and washing interior and exterior of ambulance, and restocking ambulance after each trip.
Clerical duties include completing various forms and/or reports involving personal, medical, and/or insurance information on patients as well as travel statistics.
Assists in documenting equipment inspections on ambulances and other VMC vehicles and performs other duties as assigned.
4. Operates emergency vehicle communication equipment including UHF and VHF radios in order to communicate medical information to hospitals.
Must demonstrate knowledge of VMC communication requirements and FCC rules and regulations.
Must be available for duty at all times when scheduled and is responsible for notifying the communication center of any status changes.
Is responsible for obtaining physician signatures on certification forms, which authorizes transport and must also be familiar with Third Party Provider coverage involving patients on Medicare or Medicaid.
Obtains information for appropriate documented billing procedures
5. Participates in training and continuing education classes in-house and through NC OEMS and/or ECU Medical School.
Provides documentation to unit educator of training completed and certifications received.
Serves as a preceptor for new Ambulance Department employees and participates in performance improvement activities including monitoring, data collection, and follow-up as needed.
Demonstrates a knowledge and sensitivity of the goals of the hospital, Ambulance Department, and staff while also demonstrating care and understanding for the medical and emotional needs of the patients and their families whom they serve.
High School plus less than 1 year of formal training or education. NC OEMS EMT Certification
Licensure, registration or certification required
NC Drivers License & Emergency Medical Technician certification
More than 1 year but less than 2 years experience working with a Rescue Squad or Ambulance Service.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
