The PGY2 Pediatrics residency is an ASHP-candidate program that offers rotations in a variety of settings including general pediatrics, pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, pediatric hematology-oncology, pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric infectious disease and nutrition support. Pharmacists provide clinical services in each unit of Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center, in addition to providing operational services from a pediatric satellite pharmacy. Maynard Children’s Hospital serves as a regional referral center for eastern North Carolina and is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, which allows for a wide variety of pediatric patients for residents to encounter.
Pediatric pharmacists and the PGY2 Pediatric Residents serve as members on a variety of institutional committees including, Children’s Hospital Quality Group, Sea of Safety and Antimicrobial Stewardship. They also provide education to pharmacy students, medical residents and students and nursing staff.

Requirements and structure
The program follows the accreditation standards set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). It provides in-depth training on core practice concepts in pediatric pharmacy and broad exposure to a variety of pediatric practice settings.
Applicants must be graduates of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and have successfully completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy practice residency (or one with candidate status). Applicants must also be eligible for licensure in North Carolina.

The following 10 experiences are required:
- Orientation
- General pediatrics 1 & 2
- Pediatric intensive care 1 & 2

Scholarship
Residents will complete a longitudinal research project in addition to a medication use evaluation during the residency year. Projects are designed to answer discrete clinical questions and produce results suitable for presentation and publication. The resident will have at least a cumulative of 4 weeks of dedicated research time throughout the 52-week residency year.
Practice Management
Residents work in conjunction with pharmacy administrators and the pediatric team supervisor on a variety of initiatives throughout the pharmacy department and institution. These include medication initiatives for safety and cost savings and opportunities related to interdisciplinary committee involvement. The resident will also fulfill staffing requirements according to the needs of the department at an average of one 8-hour shift per week.
Effective Education
The resident will be expected to complete two journal clubs throughout the residency year along with a Continuing Education presentation, Preceptor Development presentation, presentation of research at Southeastern Residency Conference and Interdisciplinary group presentation. The resident will also be expected to serve as a primary preceptor for a fourth-year pharmacy student during the second half of the residency year. Teaching activities include layered learning with students on rotation and the opportunity for in-services to medical and nursing staff in addition to pharmacy staff. Completion of a teaching certificate program through Campbell University School of Pharmacy is an optional experience for residents not completing this experience during their PGY1 year.

Elective experiences can include an additional month in any of the required experiences or the following experiences in either 2- or 4-week blocks. New experiences may be created on a case-by-case basis if the resident has an interest in a practice area not covered by the elective experiences listed below:

- Administration/medication safety
- Obstetrics

Application process
The program will hold virtual open houses on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6-7 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 15 from 6-7 p.m. We will also be participating in the ASHP Midyear in-person and virtual residency showcases.
All materials must be submitted through ASHP’s Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) prior to the application deadline. Three professional references are required. A separate letter of recommendation is not required. Selection of applicants is based upon academic performance, relevant experience, candidate goals, strength of references and interview. Some applicants may be screened by phone on a rolling basis.
Unless an alternative approach is required by ASHP, the program will conduct both onsite and virtual interviews, depending on candidate preference.
