The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy residency is an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited program that offers rotations in a variety of settings including Medical ICU, Trauma/Surgical ICU, Cardiac ICU, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery ICU, Neurosciences ICU, Pediatric ICU, and the Emergency Department. Pharmacists provide clinical services in each of the 24-bed ICUs and the 58-bed Emergency Department. As a Level I Trauma Center and regional referral center, our institution provides advanced critical care services throughout the region and ensures that residents encounter a variety of critically ill patients. Additionally, the East Carolina Heart Institute provides mechanical circulatory support services to patients including durable LVADs and ECMO.
Critical care pharmacists and the PGY2 Critical Care Residents serve as members on a variety of institutional committees including Critical Care Matrix, Code Blue, Stroke, Trauma and Mechanical Circulatory Support/LVAD. They also provide education to pharmacy students, medical and surgical residents, and nursing staff.

Requirements and structure
The program follows the accreditation standards set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). It provides in-depth training on core practice concepts in critical care and broad exposure to a variety of critical care practice settings.
Applicants must be graduates of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and have successfully completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy practice residency (or one with candidate status). Applicants must also be eligible for licensure in North Carolina.

The following learning experiences are required:
- Orientation
- Medical ICU
- Trauma/Surgical ICU
- Cardiac ICU
- Emergency Medicine
- Second Shift Critical Care
- Pediatric (Selective): Pediatric ICU or Neonatal ICU
- Specialty (Selective): Cardiac and Vascular Surgery ICU or Neurosciences ICU
Elective experiences can include an additional month in any of the required experiences and any of the following experiences which may be half to one month in duration. New experiences may be created on a case-by-case basis if the resident has an interest in a practice area not covered by the elective experiences listed below:

Scholarship
Residents will complete a longitudinal research project in addition to a medication use evaluation during the residency year. Projects are designed to answer discrete clinical questions and produce results suitable for presentation and publication. The resident will have at least a cumulative of 4 weeks of dedicated research time throughout the 52-week residency year.
Practice Management
Residents work in conjunction with the critical care supervisor on a variety of initiatives throughout the pharmacy department and institution. These include medication initiatives for safety and cost savings and opportunities related to critical care initiatives. The resident will also fulfill staffing requirements according to the needs of the department and average of one 8-hour shift per week.
Effective Education
The resident will be expected to complete two journal clubs throughout the residency year, along with a Continuing Education presentation, Preceptor Development presentation, presentation of research at Southeastern Residency Conference and an Interdisciplinary group presentation. The resident will also be expected to serve as a primary preceptor for a fourth-year pharmacy student during the second half of the residency year. Teaching activities include layered learning with students on rotation and the opportunity for inservices to medical and nursing staff, in addition to pharmacy staff. Completion of a teaching certificate program through Campbell University School of Pharmacy is an optional experience for residents not completing this experience during their PGY1 year.

Application process
The program will hold virtual open houses on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6-7 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 15, from 6-7 p.m. We will also be participating in the ASHP Midyear in-person showcase and ASHP virtual residency showcase on Dec. 17.
All materials must be submitted through ASHP’s Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) prior to the application deadline. Three professional references are required. A separate letter of recommendation is not required. Selection of applicants is based upon academic performance, relevant experience, candidate goals, strength of references and interview. Some applicants may be screened by phone on a rolling basis.
Unless an alternative approach is required by ASHP, the program will conduct both onsite and virtual interviews, depending on candidate preference.
