ECU Health Medical Center’s ASHP-accredited postgraduate year one (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency has an more than 30-years of history and has been developed to guide highly motivated residents through a challenging set of individualized experiences designed to meet their unique professional goals.

One of the main goals of the ECU Health Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program is to purposefully guide residents to be exceptional clinicians who are capable and willing to be dynamic leaders. By customizing each residency experience, residents will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet health care challenges today and in the future.

While meeting ASHP’s standards for residency training, our program is very flexible, structured and designed to meet the individual goals of each resident.

Requirements and structure

ASHP sets standards for pharmacy residency training. While certain experiences must be included in every resident’s plan of training, we structure our program to meet your specific goals.

Flexibility is at the core of our residency program as we design an educational year that prepares you for specialty training or gives you the educational experience necessary to begin your pharmacy career.

  • Antimicrobial Stewardship/Infectious Disease Consults
  • Critical Care Selective (select from Cardiovascular ICU, Cardiac ICU, Medical ICU, Neurosciences ICU or Surgical/Trauma ICU)
  • Pediatric Selective (select from General Pediatrics, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU or Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)
  • Research blocks (2 x 2 week blocks)

In addition, our residency program requires residents to complete a residency project, medication use evaluation and a formal poster presentation. Journal club participation, precepting of pharmacy students and multiple clinical and formal presentations are expected of residents as assigned during rotation experiences.

Application process

The PGY1 program will hold virtual open houses on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6-7 p.m. EST and Tuesday, Dec. 15, from 5-6 p.m. EST. We will also be participating in the ASHP Midyear in-person showcase and ASHP virtual residency showcase.

All materials must be submitted through ASHP’s Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) prior to the application deadline. Three professional references are required. A separate letter of recommendation is not required. Selection of applicants is based upon academic performance, relevant experience, candidate goals, strength of references and interview. Some applicants may be screened by phone on a rolling basis.

Unless an alternative approach is required by ASHP, the program will conduct both onsite and virtual interviews, depending on candidate preference.
