Residency training at ECU Health Medical Center

The ECU Health Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency program is a one-year program providing clinical experience and advanced education at ECU Health Medical Center, an academic medical center, serving the needs of rural North Carolina. Residents will have the opportunity to practice in the acute setting, a Level I Trauma Center, comprehensive stroke center, CARF accredited Inpatient rehabilitation (Neurology, Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury programs) and in the outpatient setting, as well as additional opportunities to work with the East Carolina University Doctor of Physical Therapy faculty in the outpatient clinic. The program requires 1,800 total hours, with 1,500 hours of direct patient care, 150 hours of one-on-one mentoring and 300 hours of didactic preparation. Weekly mentor sessions will include a focus on the ICF model and incorporating evidence-based practice.

Mission: To be a national model for neurologic physical therapy education by developing specialist practitioners to meet the needs of rural eastern North Carolina, dedicated to improving patient outcomes and to the growth, mentorship and leadership of licensed physical therapists.

The educational sessions focus on the application of evidence-based components of leadership development as well as ECU Health-specific leadership capacities, competencies and behaviors.
