ECU Health Medical Center, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the 974-bed flagship hospital for ECU Health and serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Health Medical Center has achieved Magnet® designation twice and provides acute and intermediate care, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to a 29-county region that is home to more than 1.4 million people.

Position Summary

  • Responsible and accountable for coordinating and supervising overall delivery of patient care within Surgical Services in accordance with the organization mission and vision.
  • Manages surgical staff and specialty coordinators.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the surgical area operationally, clinically and fiscally.
  • Verifies that perioperative team members provide safe patient care within surgical services. 
  • Incorporates and assists perioperative team members with assimilating evidence-based practices into patient care.
  •  Assists perioperative team members in evaluating practice and creating strategies for further process improvement.
  • Verifies that educational resources are available for the surgical team education and hold team members accountable for attendance and completion.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and manages positive change within the surgical services.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders.
  • Collects and analyzes data related to performance improvement projects that apply to surgical services. 
  • Uses effective conflict resolution techniques.
  • Facilitates and serves as part of the perioperative leadership team in planning patient care and strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluates Specialty Coordinators' ongoing clinical performance and specialty accountability.  
  • Oversees, mentors and coaches surgical staff and specialty coordinators.  
  • Responsible for the selection, engagement and development of team members.
  • Monitors that necessary surgical staff, equipment, and supplies are readily available to provide patient care.
  • Verifies surgical team member compliance with organizational policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Ensures performance management of team members by providing ongoing feedback and coaching on job performance, competencies, value based behaviors and developmental needs.
  • Exhibits professional, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Uses effective project management principals.
  • Pursues professional growth and participate in a professional organization.
  • Acts as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing is required.
  • Current registered nurse licensure in North Carolina is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Minimum five years perioperative services experience in multiple specialties and previous leadership experience is required.

Preferred Requirements

  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification is preferred.
