About The Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests.

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will: 

  • Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis and process specimens for analysis and reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing. May perform chain-of-custody drug collections. Performs various other support services for the laboratory as assigned. Maintains required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies.
     
  • Performs duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements.
     
  • Supports the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School, Equivalent, or Higher
     
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended

Preferred:

  • 6 months experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting 
     
  • Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency:

    National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership.
