Position Summary
Primary Purpose of Organization: An agreement between the ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation and Vidant Health Foundation has been signed and executed, creating the ECU Health Foundation. The two entities are aligned to operate as one philanthropic arm supporting ECU Health and ECU Health Sciences campus. The alignment follows the joint operating agreement between East Carolina University and then-Vidant Health to create ECU Health and work together to improve health care delivery to the 1.4 million residents of eastern North Carolina.
Under the agreement, the two foundations will remain separate legal entities, but will integrate under a new, shared brand known as ECU Health Foundation. The ECU Health Foundation was created to align the fundraising and stewardship operations of the ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation and the Vidant Health Foundation in order to boost philanthropic support for ECU Health, the ECU Schools and Colleges of the health sciences, and Laupus Library.
The ECU Health Foundation works in collaboration with ECU Division of University Advancement, as the friend-raising and fund-raising arm of the general academic areas of the university. The units and subunits within the division work together to identify, involve, cultivate, and solicit alumni and friends of the university to gain financial support from the private sector for the purpose of enhancing the long and short range growth and welfare of the university. Advancement Officers representing the Medical & Health Sciences Foundation support the fundraising needs of ECU Health Sciences campus.
Purpose of the Position:
The Director of Development is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of constituents including alumni, donors, divisional colleagues, campus partners, and volunteers. As part of the health sciences fundraising team, this position carries a portfolio of alumni and friends with major gift potential and executes significant qualification work on a monthly basis.
60% Fundraising:
-Conduct significant discovery work to build, over a multi-year period, a qualified household major gift portfolio which appropriately supports the goals set forth on an annual basis
-Develop a strategy for each prospect in portfolio; complete face-to-face visits annually as agreed upon on an annual basis with ECU Health Foundation leadership
-Using a data-driven approach with industry-wide best practices, and in collaboration with the ECU Health Foundation leadership establish and work toward annual visit, solicitation, dollars raised, and prospect qualification goals; be proactive in modifying goals as capacity is discovered
-Working in advance, plan and execute a travel strategy based on the assigned portfolio supplemented by strategic prospect discovery work
-Maintain a working knowledge of the demographics and donor patterns of the assigned; serve as a strategic facilitator of various alumni events; facilitate travel for the Chancellor, ECU Health Foundation leadership, and the Dean
-Meet monthly, quarterly and annual activity metrics
-Organize a high volume of data, distilling thousands of alumni records into a workable portfolio of major gift prospects and strategic discovery visits
-Navigate a data-driven environment using Excel and the University alumni database to secure visits, manage portfolio activity
-Demonstrate flexibility as the region is defined and your portfolio evolves to accommodate new prospects
-Overnight and day travel required as needed
20% ECU and ECU Health engagement:
-Collaborate with University Advancement and campus-wide colleagues according to prospect management guidelines for interacting with donors
-Take advantage of internal expertise in Advancement Services and Gift Records to ensure proper use of the alumni database and gift processing; attend all required database and compliance training
-Attend internal team training around fundraising priorities and take ownership of your own professional development needs; be conversant in ECU Health Foundation, Health Science schools/units, and ECU fundraising priorities and partner with the appropriate liaisons as needed to create gift proposals and steward donors
-Attend ECU Health and/or University-sponsored functions and events with a focus on the school or unit; make use of campus activities and events to create stewardship opportunities for donors
20%- Donor Stewardship and Reporting:
- Support and attend stewardship related events hosted by both ECU Health Foundation and ECU
- Work with University Advancement staff and campus partners to ensure scholarships are being awarded annually
- Collaborate with donor stewardship for fund agreement development to meet the needs of the donors and our colleges and various campus units
- As needed, answer donor specific requests for fund balances, endowment reports, history of expenditures, and scholarships
- Respond to emerging reporting and prospecting needs
Minimum Requirements
Minimum of Bachelor's degree from four-year college in related field is required. Master's and/or CFRE preferred.
Five or more years of experience in fundraising with responsibility for major and planned gifts.
Must have excellent organizational skills and communication skills and be guided by a compelling "client/customer" orientation.
