About The Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory tests by standard operating policies and procedures. Understands method principles, performs quality control & calibrations, performs preventive maintenance, and analyzes results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.

As a MLT, you will:

  • Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing and perform laboratory tests specific to department
  • Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity
  • Communicate test results in a timely manner
  • Enter and retrieve data from laboratory computer systems
  • Assist in orientation or training of new or less experienced employees or students
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment
  • Demonstrate appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace, treating patients, their families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity
  • Works alternate shifts as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, phlebotomy

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required
  • Equivalent laboratory training and/or work experience with the US military (2 years) will meet the education requirement
  • 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Or 1 year of exprience in a clinical laboratory as Medical Laboratory Technician and certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying agency

Other Information

  • 36 hours a week

Required to work a rotational work schedule of:

  • 3 (12 hour) shift (7 am - 7 pm)
  • Sunday, Monday, and Friday
  • Monday, Friday, and Saturday
