About ECU Health SurgiCenter

ECU Health SurgiCenter is a freestanding facility with a multi-specialty staff of approximately 200 physicians, all guided by a single goal: to provide quality outpatient surgical care in a patient- and family-centered environment. Performing more than 12,000 outpatient surgical procedures a year, the facility offers a convenient—and clinically excellent—alternative to inpatient hospitalization for a wide range of surgical procedures. Outpatient procedures are performed in eight modern, well-equipped suites by surgeons specializing in dental and oral surgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, general and plastic surgery, gynecology, podiatry, neurosurgery, urology and more.

Position Summary

Reviews medical record documentation, extracts data, and applies appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for complex ambulatory surgery to support billing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance. Complies with the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting as well as other nationally established rules and regulations for coding assignment.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide code assignment for Ambulatory surgery Assigning diagnostic and procedural codes to patient records using ICD-10-CM and CPT and any other designated coding classification system in accordance with coding guidelines.
  • Assigning and sequencing codes accurately based on medical record documentation.
  • Assigns diagnosis/procedure codes utilizing the 3M Encoder to arrive at the most accurate code within designated time frame.
  • Incorporates current regulatory coding requirements and guidelines appropriately.
  • Maintains weekly coding productivity log and provides feedback to the Manager of HIMS regarding any coding issues/problems.
  • Maintains coding accuracy of 95% or better.
  • Average number of records coded per week must meet minimum established quantitative standards per type of patient record.
  • Responsible for reviewing claims and correcting edits.
  • Demonstrates effective computer skills for all coding functions.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Participates in In-Service education, updates and conferences to remain current with coding requirements and guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • 2 year degree in Health Information Technology or a 4 year degree in Health Information Management- or higher.
  • Credentialed as an RHIT or RHIA or eligible to take the accreditation exam required. 
  • One to two years of experience with ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding preferred.
  • Basic computer skills are required. 
  • Proficient in Word and Excel.
  • Encoder computer experience preferred.
