ECU Health is a mission-driven, 1,708-bed academic health care system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties. The not-for-profit system is comprised of 13,000 team members, nine hospitals and a physician group that encompasses over 1,100 academic and community providers practicing in over 180 primary and specialty clinics located in more than 130 locations.

The flagship ECU Health Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, and ECU Health Maynard Children’s Hospital serve as the primary teaching hospitals for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine share a combined academic mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina through patient care, education and research.

Position Summary

Manages the Foundation's strategic donor relations and communications plan, which drives Foundation's mission/vision, builds donor pipeline, and builds brand awareness. Responsible for communicating the Foundation's impact to eastern North Carolina using all available communication channels, including print, email, social media and website.



Produce routine content for donors to demonstrate the impact of their respective giving and provide updates on ECU Health and Health Sciences of ECU.  Preferred vehicles should include, but are not limited to social media, email, and mail. 

Assist with content for appeals, fundraising collateral, acknowledgement/tax letters.

Work collaboratively with the ECU Health Foundation leadership and Board on communications efforts surrounding key initiatives and announcements.

Solicit and publicize success stories and testimonials in all regions.

Develop a solid understanding and ability to articulate the critical importance of the mission of the ECU Health Foundation and how it drives value to the enterprise and to the local communities.

Work with Sr. Dir., Health Care Philanthropy and Dir. Community Hospital Development to ensure community hospitals (and development councils) are included in the donor relations plan and oversee successful execution of local respective plans.

Solicit media to report on programs, services, milestones, achievements, open houses, fundraisers, and campaigns.

Appear at functions to: set up PA/AV systems, greet and welcome reporters and videographers, arrange speakers and subjects for media interviews and photo shoots, determine air dates/times, and create opportunities for donors to be recognized for their support.

Partner with ECU Health and ECU Marketing and Communications as needed.


Develop an annual plan for stewardship events.  Oversee the planning and execution of stewardship events, such as past chairs luncheon, Founders Circle luncheon, dedication/gift announcement events, and giving society events.

Draft, edit, or proof talking points, press releases, messages, speeches, emcee scripts, annual awards luncheons, recognition functions, and strategic plan and other presentations.

Collaborate with ECU University Advancement team with events that include ECU Health Foundation donors.

Assist with Board meetings as needed.  


Manages a team of donor relations professionals that communicate impact, host stewardship events and assist with donor retention strategies across the organization.

Develop and measure the metrics for performance scorecard of all donor relations efforts.

Develops and or applies advanced methods and tools to track effectiveness of implemented programs and campaigns.

Develop and recommend budgets to support donor relations strategies.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Partner with ECU Health corporate marketing and communications, ECU University Advancement, and ECU in the creative creation of the Foundation's integrated methods of communications, including: collateral materials, annual reports, newsletters, electronic and print publications, media alerts and press kits/releases and conferences, website and social media response-based content and monitoring.

Partner with ECU Health and ECU communications teams to develop, refine, revisit, assess, and disseminate through established distribution channels core messages to ensure organizational uniformity and consistency, and encourage and provide adequate and varied channels for two-way employee, donor feedback

Help ensure that points-of-contact (in person, in writing, through Internet-based media) are favorable and reflect the organizations image and values.

Minimum Requirements

BS in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing is required.

Associates degree and five years of experience with increasing responsibility as a communications leader or donor relations leader in a corporate environment with healthcare, higher-education, or nonprofit experience is required.

With a BS degree as defined above, five years experience with increasing responsibility as a communications leader or donor relations leader in a corporate environment with healthcare, higher-education, or nonprofit experience a plus.

Previous supervisory experience required.
