Position Summary
A Cardiac Sonographer/Echocardiographer is a credentialed medical professional with academic and clinical experience to use imaging technology to help physicians diagnose heart problems in patients. They operate ultrasound equipment that provides moving 2-D or 3-D images of the heart and its chambers. The scope of practice includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education, clinical experience and completed ARDMS- RDCS and/or RVT or CCI- RCS registration, which is the standard of practice in Ultrasound.
Responsibilities
Performs echocardiograms. Adult and pediatric (as applicable), outpatient and inpatient that include 2-D, 3-D, limited, extensive, tranesophageal, bubble studies and Doppler studies.
Schedule patients.
Obtain physician orders prior to performing study.
Perform echo in lab, OR or bedside. Appropriate imaging must be obtained by the sonographer in order to facilitate the physician in making accurate diagnosis.
Documentation completed (including a preliminary report, charges and images made available for physician interpretation).
Schedules patient.
Obtain physician orders and verify consent has been obtained.
Records baseline EKG's and enters appropriate patient information into computer.
Assists physician with stress test.
Acquires appropriate documentation and images.
Performs holter monitor application and scanning analysis (as applicable).
Schedules patient and obtains physician's orders.
Explains procedure, prepares patient by placing leads, electrodes and monitor on patient.
Instructs patient on use of the holter.
Documents appropriate information in appropriate location.
Performs holter scanning procedures and creates preliminary report for physician interpretation.
Performs other duties as assigned, i.e., completing patient charges, participating in quality monitoring activities for the lab, scheduling patients, collecting data, etc.
May serve as quality improvement unit representative.
Maintains equipment in working order, including appropriate cleaning and troubleshooting.
Cleans equipment per protocol between cases.
Notifies appropriate service representative for equipment malfunctions after attempts at troubleshooting are exhausted. Notifies supervisor of any safety issues or inspection that are needed.
Assures adequate supply of linen, procedure supplies including: gels, electrodes, needles, syringes, printer paper, etc., and pharmacy supplies.
Serves as preceptor to diagnostic medical sonography students and maintains communication with Pitt Community College instructors.
Assists with clinical instruction of sonography students during their clinical rotations.
Minimum Requirements
High school or equivalent (or higher)
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Current ARDMS (RDCS or RVT) or CCI (RSC) registration/certification
5 years of experience as Cardiac and/or Vascular Sonographer
