Position Summary

A Nuclear Medicine Technologist is a Nuclear Medicine professional that is qualified by professional credentialing and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using radioactive tracers and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, and has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate ARRT (N) and/or CNMT certification(s) which is the standard practice in Nuclear Medicine.

Responsibilities

Obtains, maintains and prepares, evaluates and properly administers the appropriate radio pharmaceuticals through the appropriate route (under the direction of an authorized user) and documents according to regulatory standards.

Selects the appropriate imaging or data collection parameters.

Positions the patient for imaging and obtains high quality images.

Performs processing and data analysis.

Ensures the proper performance of the imaging systems, radiation detection and counting devices, including, but not limited to, scintillation cameras, dose calibrators, survey instruments, well counters and uptake probes.

Performs radioactive contamination monitoring and any necessary decontamination procedures, disposing of radioactive waste in accordance with state and institutional regulations, by using ALARA and participating in the principles of radiation safety.

Follows patient safety guidelines, organizational policies and procedures, professional standards of performance, best practices and regulatory requirements related to patient care and quality.

Understands and incorporates the policies of HIPAA into daily work habits.

Displays appropriate behavior in regards to giving and receiving constructive feedback. Works towards departmental goals.

Competent in the usage of Pyxis, if applicable.

Maintains a professional appearance by adhering to the departmental dress code and maintaining a stocked, clean work environment.

Has an understanding and realizes the importance of JCAHO standards.

Demonstrates proper radiation safety for patient, self and others within procedure.

Documents patient information in PACS as needed - patient symptoms, symptoms duration, associated symptoms not included in PACs, relevant surgical and medical history, and explanation for limited study.

Assesses patient's current medical status to evaluate changes that require immediate medical intervention.

Maintains a teamwork approach with other staff members. The technologist demonstrates the ability to accept supervision and ask for assistance when necessary.

Charges for procedure(s), isotope(s), and patient supplies.

Attends departmental staff meetings as scheduled and reads departmental e-mails on a regular basis.

Technologist is responsible for daily use, quality control and proper maintenance of equipment. Notify manager and other staff when there are equipment issues.

Knows downtime procedures and is able to practice when applicable.

Ensures all exam orders are began, changed, and ended in Radiant.

All images are reviewed for quality and then sent to the PACs system for radiologist interpretation; exams are reconciled for interpretation in a timely fashion.

Shares in the transport of patients, when able.

Takes call and is accountable for work assignments, if applicable.

Performs other duties as assigned, i.e., stocking, inventory, etc.

Demonstrates the full range of procedures reflecting appropriate patient care and knowledge for patients ranging in age from neonatal to geriatric.
Accurately explains all procedures and exams to the patient and family members.

Informed consent is obtained after procedure has been explained and prior to procedure being performed, when applicable.

Respects patient privacy by protecting patient's modesty and dignity throughout procedure.

Minimum Requirements

High school or equivalent (or higher)

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Current Registered Nuclear Medicine technologist ARRT (NM) or CNMT or registry eligible and registry must be obtained within 12 months from date of hire
