Position Summary
The Vice President of Pharmacy is a key system leader at ECU Health and will provide fiscal and strategic leadership and management of all pharmacy services enterprise wide. The VP of Pharmacy will provide for the coordination, integration and analysis of pharmacy services across ECU Health in accordance with our mission and vision. Manages complex change initiatives, directs the pharmacy leadership team, and creates an empowering environment for staff to thrive. Assumes complete accountability for the overall delivery of pharmacy services and promotes evidence based use of medication, financial stability, standard work and positive patient outcomes. Exhibits vision and influential direction on pharmaceutical issues across ECU Health. Collaborates closely with other healthcare providers both locally and regionally.
ECU Health Medical Center is a 900+ bed academic medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Medical Center is a regional referral center and the flagship hospital for ECU Health. ECU Health Medical Center has over 700 practicing physicians on its medical staff. The Medical Center serves 29 counties in eastern North Carolina with a population of 1.4 million people. On an annual basis, it serves 45,000 inpatients and over 170,000 outpatients (including 117,000 ED visits), in addition to a surgical volume of 21,000. Total operating revenue for ECU Medical Center - 1.1 Billion; net patient revenue - 1 Billion. In its role as an academic medical center, ECU Medical Center currently trains 2,500 students in a variety of fields including nursing and allied health. Through its relationship with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, ECU Medical Center employs and trains over 300 residents in 14 programs as well as 80 fellows in 20 programs.
Responsibilities
Responsible for the overall pharmacy operations and the coordination of pharmacy services throughout all ECU Health.
Develops a structure for the pharmacy enterprise that requires accountability and encourages professional growth. Leads standardization efforts, systemization and performance improvement initiatives across the enterprise.
Ensures continuous quality improvement strategies are in place and effective. Makes and implements recommendations to improve operational efficiency and to implement new services for areas of responsibility.
Assumes ultimate accountability for staffing, and appropriately manages leadership and staff issues in collaboration with Human Resources.
Ensures the development of accurate and reliable budgets for each pharmacy cost center across the enterprise. Recognizes potential for revenue growth for pharmacy services and executes plans that capitalize on that potential as appropriate.
Oversees and ensures robust procedures for safe and secure storage and distribution of controlled substances.
Facilitates applicable committee activities and participates on other committees and task forces as a member, consultant or chair as assigned.
Ensures the integrity of the health systems 340b programs and maintains contemporary processes to maximize clinical utilization as well as revenue integrity.
Recruit, retain and develop a highly-skilled professional staff and ensure staffing meets patient care needs.
Engages in continuous study of the entire professional field, including adopting and potentially creating best practices, to maintain the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities. Completes required continuous training and education as required. Ensures that services are provided in accordance with State and Federal regulations, organizational policy and accreditation and compliance requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Required Bachelor's Degree of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy.
Ten years of relevant experience in pharmacy with progressively responsible leadership required.
Experience working in an organization of size and complexity comparable to ECU Health required.
Experience with 340b, specialty pharmacy, infusion and ambulatory care required.
Eligible for licensure in the State of North Carolina
Active involvement in professional pharmacy organizations (ex. ASHP) preferred.
