These professionals calibrate and set up radiation therapy equipment and position patients to ensure accurate treatments and pinpoint radiation doses to tumor areas, minimizing exposure to normal and critical surrounding structures. This work must be performed with the highest level of accuracy to achieve the expected treatment outcome.
The Radiation Therapists are accountable for maintaining daily quality assurance measures on the linear accelerators and other departmental equipment.
In addition, the Radiation Therapists instruct radiation therapy students, medical physics graduate students, medical residents, and other healthcare providers on the operation of radiation therapy machines and explain and demonstrate specific procedures and techniques; and provide assistance on cancer research projects.
1. Interprets information via the patient's electronic chart and follows the simulation plan accurately administering the exact prescribed dosage or radiation. Therefore, the technologist must have the ability (primarily through experience) to detect/prevent errors and judge the allowable deviation from a planned course of treatment.
Patient positioning using immobilization devices which were constructed during the simulation process.
Emotional and physical support of the patient. This is an ongoing process because of the length of treatment course, disease process and discomfort associated with the disease. This is especially important since many patients may experience sore mouths, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Liaison between patient and physician.
Implementation of the therapy treatment plan. The technologist must make many judgment calls in the course of his/her work. The prescribed treatment must be exact and very precise. Success of the treatment plan depends upon the accuracy of this therapists work. Inaccuracies can result in serious complications, including the destruction of healthy tissues or tumor recurrences.
Transport of patients to out of department diagnostic procedures and positioning for the purpose of treatment planning or treatment execution.
2. Quality Assurance
Perform quality assurance on the linear accelerators and other departmental equipment.
Compliance with regulatory or other accrediting bodies.
Protects patients and other personnel from radiation hazards.
Responsible for instructing radiation therapy technology students, medical physics graduate students, medical residents and perhaps other health care providers in operation of the treatment machines: Varian Truebeam and Accuray Cyberknife.
Operation of the GE Light speed CTSimulator is also required.
Responsible for verbal explanation of specific procedures and techniques in the delivery of radiation therapy treatments. Considerable knowledge of the theory and practical application will be necessary in order to answer questions about each procedure and technique.
Demonstration of the procedures and techniques related to radiation therapy treatments.
4. Physically able to lift up to 20 lbs. above the head. Some bending, pulling, lifting and pushing abilities required to assist with moving patients on and off treatment tables. Minimal about of squatting required.
Current RT (R) (T) certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiology
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Associate Degree or higher
Three to ten years related experience
Graduation from a Radiation Therapy Technologist program approved by the Council of Allied Health Education and
Accreditation and certification eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy
Technology. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
