Position Summary

Bed Count: 24 Bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

The CICU provides services to adult, acutely ill patients experiencing the following:

  • Acute STEMI
  • Decompensated heart failure
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Post-cardiac arrest
  • Hemodynamic instability
  • ECMO

Registered nurses provide care in conjunction with the nursing assistant and medical team. The unit maintains one charge nurse without patient assignment and may have a float nurse, as well, depending on volume and acuity.

Skills that will be utilized include: continuous infusion medication management, pain management, wound care, arterial line maintenance, central line maintenance, pulmonary arterial catheter management, tracheotomy care, chest tubes maintenance, mechanical ventilation monitoring, and continuous cardiac monitoring. Additionally, CICU team members will assist providers with bedside procedures and acquire skills with devices, including mechanical support devices, NxStage renal treatment and Arctic Sun for targeted temperature management.

Responsibilities

  • Assures healing without harm through use of safety habits and error prevention tools, periodic rounding, and engagement in daily safety huddle
  • Obtains and interprets initial and ongoing systematic patient/family assessment data, incorporating information from other appropriate sources.
  • Uses patient/family assessment data to formulate relevant nursing plan of care.
  • Collaborates with patient/family/significant others(s) and interdisciplinary team members to mutually formulate realistic and measurable outcomes based on clinical presentation and plan of care.
  • Collaborates with the patient/family/significant others (s) and interdisciplinary team members to develop an individualized plan of care which includes learning needs to achieve optimal health and well-being and transition across the continuum.
  • Implements and actions interventions identified in the plan of care with consideration for patients' needs across the life span.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in Nursing, Associates in Nursing or higher
  • Bachelors Degree is preferred.
  • Current NC RN license or licensure to practice in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact state Health Care Provider is required.
  • Basic Life Support is required.
