About ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, a campus of ECU Health Medical Center

ECU Health Beaufort Hospital is located in Washington and serves as a campus ECU Health Medical Center, our Level I Trauma Center in Greenville. The 142-bed full-service hospital offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services including medical, surgical, intensive care, emergency, pediatrics and women’s services. In addition there is a lab, diagnostic imaging services, physical and respiratory therapy. The facility also features the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, offering leading-edge chemotherapy and radiation therapy, among other cancer services.

Position Summary

CAREER LADDER

Level I: 

Provides direct patient care by offering appropriate treatments according to age and condition. Actively seeks to improve knowledge and skills of self and others. Provides appropriate leadership. Meets clinical productivity standards. Meets competency requirements. Will also be involved in team dynamics and participate in interdisciplinary activities when appropriate.

Level II, III and IV: 

Provides patient care under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist through: performing treatment, communicating with the supervising PT and other health care professionals, appropriate documentation. Participates in departmental/team quality improvement activities. Delegates appropriate tasks to PT technicians and supervises. Responsible for education of self, peers, patients, and students and assists with new employee orientation. Assists with or performs special projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provides physical therapy treatments, participates in discharge planning and provides patient/caregiver education, per therapist direction, for patients whom the therapist assistant is qualified to treat, according to age and condition by virtue of training and orientation. Adjusts work load to meet the demands of patient care including the alteration of scheduled work hours including weekends. Is responsible for the safety of patients assigned while they are in the patient treatment areas and is aware of the overall safety conditions in the areas. Unsafe conditions or actions are to be corrected and /or reported to appropriate management staff. Meets clinical productivity standards
  • Communicates and consults with physical therapist regarding patients status on a regular and frequent basis. Communicates and interacts with other health care professionals, patient/caregiver according to age group and background in an appropriate and timely manner through verbal, written or nonverbal.
  • Completes documentation requirements promptly, accurately and thoroughly according to policies
  • Supervises/delegates portions of patient care to appropriate personnel. Actively participates in supervising students as deemed appropriate by the supervisor/clinical coordinator.
  • Actively seeks to improve knowledge and skills by attendance at inservices and continuing education programs and shares such knowledge and skills with others. Attends and participates in all mandatory inservices/meetings. Additional training/certification as deemed necessary to practice in a specialty area as dictated by patients' ages or conditions.
  • Actively participates in: establishment of program goals and objective, establishment of program budget, staff utilization including the supervision and delegation of portions of patient care to appropriate personnel, space allocation, quality improvement and program development, Assists in the development, revision, implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures. Assists in the orientation of personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

CAREER LADDER

Level I: 

  • Associate Degree or higher
  • Graduation with Associate Degree as Physical Therapist Assistant from an APTA accredited school. Current licensure or eligible for licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant by The North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiner is required.
  • 3 years or less of licensure is required

Level II: 

  • Associate Degree or higher
  • High School plus 2 years or more of formal training or education (Specify: Physical Therapist Assistant)
  • Registration or Certification: North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy
  • 3 years, less than 5 years licensure required

Level III:

  • Associate Degree or higher
  • High School plus 2 years or more of formal training or education (Specify: Physical Therapist Assistant)
  • Registration or Certification: North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy
  • 5 years, less than 10 years of licensure is required

Level IV: 

  • High School plus 2 years or more of formal training or education (Specify: Physical Therapist Assitant)
  • Registration or Certification: North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy
  • 10 or more years of licensure is required
